Bide A Wee Quilting Association began with a group of avid quilters. We wanted to purchase a long arm quilting machine for our community, and set out in 2012 to raise funds to do so.
We made and sold LOTS of quilts, approached the Ag Society and Village Council for support and assistance in securing a grant, and within the next year, we had our dream! We have upgraded to a newer model since that joyful day, and it is available to anyone living within the Ag Society Boundaries to use. It is such a wonderful and welcome addition to our little village.
We adopted our name from the original Bide A Wee Club which was organized in the fall of 1928 in Hill Spring. This club quilted (at least 2 quilts per month), knitted, crocheted and gardened. The club continued on until just a few years before our long arm came on the scene, speeding up the quilting process exponentially (2 quilts in a DAY easily!). Although we are not a club, we decided to take their name for our Association, since many of our ancestors were a part of Bide A Wee - a Scottish name which means, ‘sit a while’.
Our purpose is to keep the art of quilting alive and strong, and to involve upcoming generations, inspiring them to continue on bringing warmth and comfort to their families and friends. Each year we hold a quilt show here in town, a wonderful time for all to share. We also invite and work with community members to make and give quilts to those in need. To date, we have donated 285 quilts to charities locally and internationally. And further, we believe this society brings people of all ages, ethnicities and cultures together as we create beautiful quilts.
